02/20/19

Good Evening, The market began the morning session slightly in the negative but managed to close with modest gains after the minutes of the last Fed meeting were released. Those minutes echoed the fact that the Fed has put it’s rate increases on hold at least for now. A dovish Fed and progress in U.S.-China trade negotiations have helped the S&P 500 rise about 18 percent from its lows in December, when the market fell on fears of a global economic slowdown. The index is trading about 5 percent below the record closing high it hit in late September. Most of our charts are either hitting or close to hitting overhead resistance. So I look for stocks to pretty much move sideways with a slight positive bias in anticipation of a trade deal. Make no mistake, a potential trade deal with China is whats holding the bears at bay. Failure to reach a deal could open the door for them to push the market lower. That said, they are currently afraid that a trade deal with China will leave them in the dust. Thus, they are keeping their distance……for now……….

The days trading left us with the following signals: Our TSP allotment added another +0.21%. A little bit every day adds up to a lot! For comparison, the Dow gained +0.24%, the Nasdaq +0.03%, and the S&P 500 +0.18%. Praise God for another day in the green!

Good Afternoon, We talked last week about Jerome Powell’s speech at Jackson Hole Wyoming being a possible inflection point for the market and that’s exactly what it ended up being. The Fed chairman gave a somewhat dovish address in which he noted that  “the baseline outlook and the shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting…
