07/19/17

Good Evening, The market moved to new highs today as merger talk between Disney and Scripps Network International set a positive tone. That noted, it is the time of the year when one does well not to overdo their expectations. Seasonally speaking, the period from July 17th through September 27th is the worst period of year for stocks since records have been kept. The old adage to sell in may and go away until November is a joke, but if I was going to even consider such a strategy I might be compelled to sell on July 17th. While the chance for under performance is greater during this time of the year it is worth noting that the market does have positive returns a significant percentage of the time and if there is even a small chance that I will make money I’m going to invest. Let me quote one more old saying “You have to be in it to win it”.

So how did we do today? Our TSP allotment added another +0.44%. For comparison, the Dow gained +0.31%, the Nasdaq +0.64%, and the S&P 500 +0.54%.

Good Afternoon, We talked last week about Jerome Powell’s speech at Jackson Hole Wyoming being a possible inflection point for the market and that’s exactly what it ended up being. The Fed chairman gave a somewhat dovish address in which he noted that  “the baseline outlook and the shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting…
