11/07/18

Good Evening, The voters have spoken and the market has reacted. The reaction for now at least is that the market views the split congress as a glass half full. The way I hear a lot of the chatter is that investors feel that the current pro business policies are safe. Their thinking is that the pro-business Trump fiscal policies are still in place and deregulation will continue, but new stimulus policies that may push interest rates higher are being avoided. They also feel that the Democratic house will keep the administration in check with regard to the trade war. The whole thing is thought of as a Goldilocks situation. Not to hot and not too cold. While some of that argument has merit, I’m not totally ready to sound the all clear tone. Once the newness wears off of this arrangement, the reality of more political battles might set in and that distraction is not necessarily something the market likes. Dealing with issues such as the budget and debt ceiling will likely present problems. We will see how it all goes but my guess is that it may not be as smooth as today’s celebration suggests…….
