11/26/2020 Thanksgiving

Good Day, First and foremost let me wish each and every one of you a happy thanksgiving! I pray that this message finds you all safe and well with your families. So why am I writing this blog on thanksgiving?? Because it’s the only time I could find a break in my schedule to do so! I think we will all agree this has not been a normal year. By the matter of fact I will go so far as to say that it has been the most abnormal year that I have experienced in my lifetime. That inadvertently is the reason that I am writing this blog today and is also the reason that I have so much to be thankful for particularly on this Thanksgiving in 2020. Both my wife and I retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons on September 30, 2011. Like so many new retirees we were full of grandiose dreams of what retirement would be like. After all, we had worked hard and been very successful with our TSP. I don’t want to chase any rabbits but that is how this whole blog got started. I had to separate all the TSP activity from work! Anyway, there was my plan of retirement and there has God’s plan and they were quite different. After a few months living the leisure life near a little town in South Florida called LaBelle my dad who was then in his late seventies started falling. He still had a trucking company and all the property to go with it. The bottom line is that there was a lot of upkeep. It was not long after that we found out that he had Parkinson’s disease. He is a retired United States Marine and had been sprayed with agent orange in Vietnam resulting in his Parkinson’s. Suffice to say our plans to build a retirement home in a yet to be decided location had to be put off while we returned to western Kentucky to help my folks. Fast forward to last July. We were finally able to get everything squared away with my mom in a home in town and my dad in the Western Kentucky Veterans Center. Let me give a shout out to those fine folks at the Western Kentucky Veterans Center located in Hanson Kentucky. They are largely funded by the state of Kentucky with very little Federal money and do a wonderful job of taking care of our veteran hero’s from that state! So we stored everything and loaded up our camper and headed off to the the smokies to find our forever home. What we thought was a small trip turned out to be an odyssey thanks to the Pandemic. After searching tirelessly God finally led us to a small piece of property located close to the Cherokee National Forrest and the Smokie Mountain National Park. At the time the real estate market was so hot that if you wanted a place you were going to have to build it. So that’s what we did. On December 23, 2019 at the beginning of the pandemic in the pouring rain and mud we moved a few things out of our camper into our partially finished home. We spent Christmas eve there with two lawn chairs and a little foot tall plastic Christmas tree. At the time In remember wondering what it must of been like for our savoir Jesus Christ who was born in a manger so may years ago. At least I had a warm dry (inside) place to sleep. I was thankful then and I’m thankful now. We had no idea that what we were facing in the pandemic and that due to those challenges that it would take us more than a year to finish our home. The difficulties getting materials and the excessive cost due to the Pandemic were almost more than we could overcome and while things are still not totally done the end is a matter of weeks away. Again, it was not my plan but God’s plan. I have been reminded repeatedly throughout this difficult process that I’m not control of anything. But….. I am also reminded of what God’s word says in Roman’s 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for the good of them that love God, to them who are appointed to His purpose.”  OK, alright I love God….. So I am also reminded of Romans 8:39 ” Nor height, nor depth, nor any creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”. He and He alone is all I need…and for that I am eternally thankful. This a very short version of a very long story…..I will save you the pain of having to hear it all. In the end it was God that got us through this mess. What is it we used to say on a bad day in the Bureau? Don’t sweat the small stuff and all stuff is small stuff! Yeah that’s it. Give it all to Jesus. In closing with these thoughts, I will add that it has been very difficult to keep up this blog. I am sorry for the disruptions. They should greatly improve in the coming year. Why didn’t I quit??? If not for my thrift I could never have overcome this obstacle financially. If it’s that important to me then it must be even more important to others. You get blessings by being a blessing. So always pass it along! That’s the reason I didn’t quit!!!! May God bless you all and no matter what your going through, I guarantee you that there is something somewhere, some little thing to be Thankful for. No matter how big the problem is God is bigger! It may not seem like that now, but some day, some way, looking back it will become abundantly clear. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!

So let’s take a quick look at the market…… The battle between the cases of Covid 19 and the rush to distribute a vaccine continue to have a tight grip on the market. While we are indeed making money that is not the case for a lot of the market. For the most part it continues to trade sideways and it says here that it will do so until the vaccine finally overcomes the Corona Virus which it will ultimately do. Also worth noting is the choice of Janet Yellen as Treasury Secretary for the Biden administration. The former Chairwomen of the Federal Reserve is an excellent choice which at least for now sends a message that the Biden Administration will not go overboard with market crippling regulations. Our task remains to monitor our charts and respond to any changes that we see. I might add that our job IS NOT to anticipate what may or may not happen. We must take it as if comes!!

Wednesday’s trading left us with the following results:  Our TSP allotment posted a gain of +0.42%. For comparison, the Dow dropped -0.58%, the Nasdaq added +0.48%, and the S&P 500 slipped -0.16%. Praise God for another good day!
